Coherent uncertainty analysis of aerosol measurements from multiple satellite sensors
نویسنده
چکیده
Aerosol retrievals from multiple spaceborne sensors, including MODIS (on Terra and Aqua), MISR, OMI, POLDER, CALIOP, and SeaWiFS – altogether, a total of 11 different aerosol products – were comparatively analyzed using data collocated with ground-based aerosol observations from the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) stations within the Multi-sensor Aerosol Products Sampling System (MAPSS, http://giovanni.gsfc.nasa.gov/mapss/ and http: //giovanni.gsfc.nasa.gov/aerostat/). The analysis was performed by comparing quality-screened satellite aerosol optical depth or thickness (AOD or AOT) retrievals during 2006– 2010 to available collocated AERONET measurements globally, regionally, and seasonally, and deriving a number of statistical measures of accuracy. We used a robust statistical approach to detect and remove possible outliers in the collocated data that can bias the results of the analysis. Overall, the proportion of outliers in each of the quality-screened AOD products was within 7 %. Squared correlation coefficient (R2) values of the satellite AOD retrievals relative to AERONET exceeded 0.8 for many of the analyzed products, while root mean square error (RMSE) values for most of the AOD products were within 0.15 over land and 0.07 over ocean. We have been able to generate global maps showing regions where the different products present advantages over the others, as well as the relative performance of each product over different land cover types. It was observed that while MODIS, MISR, and SeaWiFS provide accurate retrievals over most of the land cover types, multi-angle capabilities make MISR the only sensor to retrieve reliable AOD over barren and snow/ice surfaces. Likewise, active sensing enables CALIOP to retrieve aerosol properties over brightsurface closed shrublands more accurately than the other sensors, while POLDER, which is the only one of the sensors capable of measuring polarized aerosols, outperforms other sensors in certain smoke-dominated regions, including broadleaf evergreens in Brazil and South-East Asia.

Satellite Stratospheric Aerosol Measurement Validation
I The validity of the stratospheric aerosol measurements made by the satellite sensors SAM II and SAGE has been tested by comparing their results with each other and with results obtained by other techniques (lidar. dustsonde. filter. impactor). The latter type of comparison has required the development of special techniques that (1) convert the quantity measured by the correlative sensor (e.g....
متن کاملRetrieval of aerosol backscatter and extinction from airborne coherent Doppler wind lidar measurements
A novel method for calibration and quantitative aerosol optical property retrieval from Doppler wind lidars (DWLs) is presented in this work. Due to the strong wavelength dependence of the atmospheric molecular backscatter and the low sensitivity of the coherent DWLs to spectrally broad signals, calibration methods for aerosol lidars cannot be applied to coherent DWLs usually operating at wavel...
متن کاملQuantification of uncertainty in aerosol optical thickness retrieval arising from aerosol microphysical model and other sources, applied to Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) measurements
Satellite instruments are nowadays successfully utilised for measuring atmospheric aerosol in many applications as well as in research. Therefore, there is a growing need for rigorous error characterisation of the measurements. Here, we introduce a methodology for quantifying the uncertainty in the retrieval of aerosol optical thickness (AOT). In particular, we concentrate on two aspects: uncer...

Path radiance due to aerosols plays an important role over satellite derived reflectance due to higher aerosol optical depth and their seasonal variations. In addition, satellite data from high-resolution sensors are subjected to adjacency effect, which reduces apparent surface contrast by decreasing the top of the atmosphere radiance over bright pixels and increasing the brightness of the dark...

Accurate information on concentrations and physical properties of atmospheric aerosol over land surfaces is of great importance for air pollution control and climate research. The aerosol distributions over land surfaces are characterized by high spatial variability, depending on topography, meteorological conditions, and the distribution and magnitude of aerosol sources and sinks. Global aeros...
